MOTAC says tourist arrival performance for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) remains encouraging despite global uncertainties, particularly the conflict in West Asia, which had the potential to affect transit routes and international travel patterns.

According to the ministry’s deputy secretary-general for tourism, arrivals up to February this year increased by more than 30% compared with the same period last year, with strong inbound numbers recorded during the Chinese New Year and Aidilfitri festive periods. MOTAC coordinated Aidilfitri celebrations at nine major airports nationwide, including both KLIA terminals, Penang, Johor, Kedah, Perak, Sabah and Sarawak.

Officials noted that global instability is not only a challenge but could also create new opportunities for Malaysia: as travellers increasingly favour closer, more stable destinations over distant ones, Malaysia may benefit from a shift in regional travel behaviour.

Why it matters: Sustained arrival growth, especially around festive high seasons, supports demand for licensed tourist guides and travel packages. Tourism professionals should watch how West Asia transit disruptions evolve, as MOTAC has indicated it is coordinating strategies to manage related impacts.
