MOTAC has clarified that tourist guides who have already submitted a licence renewal application and are awaiting approval will not be compounded, even if their current licence has technically lapsed while the application is being processed.

The ministry continues to recommend that guides complete Continuing Tourism Related Education (CTRE) courses as a prerequisite for renewal, in line with Section 32 of the Tourism Industry Act 1992. CTRE training is described by MOTAC as ongoing education aimed at improving the quality of tourist guiding services.

However, MOTAC noted it takes a serious view of guiding services that operate without a valid licence, or without having submitted any renewal application at all. Under the Integrated Operation of Tourism Vehicles and Public Service Vehicles, launched in July, a number of inspection notices have already been issued under Section 21 of the Act.

Why it matters for tourist guides: If your licence is close to expiring, submit your renewal application promptly and make sure your CTRE certificates are up to date — guides who do so are protected from compounding while their application is processed. GIT Academy runs CTRE courses throughout the year to help guides stay compliant.
