KL Heritage Walk

On 15 August 2026, GIT Academy Tourist Guide Course students took part in a KL Heritage Walk through the heart of colonial-era Kuala Lumpur, led by trainers Dr Samantha Yap and Citrey Wong.

The walk took students through some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. At Dataran Merdeka, students stood before the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, with its distinctive Moorish-style copper domes and clock tower — one of the most photographed heritage buildings in Kuala Lumpur and a cornerstone stop on almost any KL city tour.

The route continued to the River of Life, at the historic confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers where Kuala Lumpur was founded, with views across to Masjid Jamek and its striking Moorish architecture — giving students a first-hand look at how the city’s revitalised riverside walkway now connects its founding site to the surrounding cityscape.

Students also visited the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, exploring galleries of pewter craftsmanship and hearing from a guide about the techniques and history behind the trade. The visit included a walk through the centre’s exhibition spaces and connecting passageways, giving students insight into how a working heritage brand presents its story to visitors through guided tours — a useful reference point for their own future commentary delivery.

Walks like this give students the chance to experience Kuala Lumpur’s heritage core the way visitors will one day encounter it with them as their guide — connecting classroom learning to the real streets, rivers and landmarks that define the city’s story.
