Muzium Negara (National Museum) Visit

On 17 January 2026, GIT Academy Tourist Guide Course students visited Muzium Negara (the National Museum) in Kuala Lumpur on a field study trip, led by trainer Dr Samantha Yap, with 19 students and staff taking part. The visit was designed to give students a systematic, gallery-by-gallery understanding of Malaysia’s development from prehistoric times through the Malay kingdoms, colonial rule, and into the formation of the modern nation.

The tour began outside the museum itself, with the large relief murals on its exterior wall — a visual narrative spanning Malaysia’s prehistoric era, the Malay kingdoms, the colonial period, and independence, giving students an overview of the national story before stepping inside.

Once inside, the group moved through seven galleries in sequence:

• Prehistoric Gallery — stone tools, pottery, archaeological artefacts and models illustrating early human life, tool use and migration, and the region’s place in Southeast Asian prehistory
• Malay Kingdoms & Early Civilisation — the rise of the Melaka Sultanate, and how Malaysia’s strategic location, open trade and cultural openness made it a hub for regional trade and cultural exchange
• Colonial Period — the political, economic and social impact of Portuguese, Dutch and British rule, shown through historical documents, images and models
• Ethnicity & Culture — the traditional dress, everyday objects and customs of Malaysia’s Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous communities
• Modern Malaysia — the path to independence and the country’s political and economic development since
• Malay Culture Pavilion — traditional Malay social structure, etiquette, art, clothing, musical instruments and architectural models
• Indigenous & Minority Peoples Pavilion — the cultural characteristics and ways of life of Malaysia’s indigenous and minority communities

Through the visit, students built a clearer overall picture of Malaysia’s historical development, deepened their understanding of the country’s multi-ethnic, multicultural makeup, and practised turning historical and cultural content into engaging guiding commentary — treating the trip not just as a museum visit, but as a structured exploration of history, culture and national identity that lays real groundwork for future guiding, education and cultural promotion work.
