A new Bumiputera economic empowerment master plan for Penang includes a dedicated Bumiputera Tour Guide Initiative worth RM200,000, aimed at helping participants complete training and obtain their official tourist guide licences, according to state officials.
The Penang Island City Council (MPBPP) allocates approximately RM8,000 per participant to undergo training, as part of what officials described as a government investment in producing high-quality Bumiputera tour guides. The initiative aims to train 20 new participants in the coming year. The tour guide funding sits within a broader master plan of 40 components spanning development programmes, training and new physical projects.
State officials described the effort as a strategic push to increase Bumiputera participation in the tour guiding profession, which requires specialised training and formal MOTAC licensing to practise legally.
